The festival gives students the opportunity to prepare a solo which a certified NYSSMA judge evaluates and grades based on very specific criteria. The selections are listed by instrument and solo level.
The version you perform must match exactly with the one listed in the manual - composer, editor, arranger and publisher. When you perform for the judge, you must have two originals of the solo - one for yourself and the other for the judge. A good pair of jeans can go a long way, and it's worth investing in a pair for auditions alone. This isn't the place to wear a short skirt or low cut top. What should a soloist wear?
What is the proper attire for a concert if you're a violin soloist? For an evening concert, formal black. Suit or tux, white shirt, black bow tie for the gents, black sleeveless gown for the ladies. What is a Nyssma solo? What is it? The music is listed in six levels according to difficulty. Students play or sing before an adjudicator and are evaluated on their performance. What should a pianist wear? Formal pants are an appropriate choice for male or female performers.
Female pianists may also choose a skirt or dress, but it should be knee-length or longer. Wear dress shoes, but avoid higher heels or any shoes with slippery bottoms, which could slip on the piano pedals.
What should I wear to a vocal audition? Wearing jeans and your cool tennis shoes is fine for a pop-rock audition, but not for an opera audition. If you're not auditioning for a character role, choose an outfit that shows off your personality and highlights your figure.
What do you wear to a violin audition? What should I wear for my audition? Just go through it front to back. By the time you do your solo, you will be completely comfortable with the piece. This is a great way to monitor your progress. Finally, make sure you understand what your piece is about. What is the story the song is telling? Then, put that emotion into the song. The difference between a mediocre performance and a great one is the amount of emotion put behind the piece.
There are specific requirements for each level so make sure you know them. Give yourself 2 scales per week to really master backwards and forwards. Challenge yourself and play them in contrary motion and in parallel. These should be done as a warmup every single day before you practice your solo. Make sure they are also at the specified tempo that is required for your level. Make it a performance. Be expressive. I have had several students actually receive applause based on this advice.
Practicing in front of a camera is very revealing. Yes, I know…. I also recommend recording yourself, and walking away for a few minutes and coming back and watching. OR record yourself at the end of your practice session, wait until the next day before your practice session to view and make corrections.
Perform for your friends, your parents, your pets. Ask for constructive feedback. Feedback is one of the best ways to get better. Dress as you would for a school concert. White shirt and black or dark pants is the best option. Young ladies, if you choose to wear a skirt, make sure it is below the knee. Simple black shoes for both young men and ladies. Avoid sneakers. New stockings for ladies, matching socks for everybody. Have your hair neat and off your face. No jewelry that will get in the way of your playing.
